Card payments — tap, insert, and swipe
How card acceptance works in Swipee today, and what it will do once a live rail is connected.
Updated 21 August 2026
Swipee supports three card journeys: tap (contactless, using the phone's NFC), insert (chip and PIN), and swipe (magnetic stripe).
Tap on the phone
Newer Android phones can read a contactless card directly, with no extra hardware.
- 1Tap Charge, then Card.
- 2Choose Tap.
- 3Hold the card flat against the back of the phone, near the top.
- 4Keep it still until the screen changes.
If nothing happens, check that NFC is turned on in your phone settings, and remove any thick case.
Insert or swipe
These need a card reader paired with the phone. See Pair a card reader.
What is recorded
Whichever journey you use, Swipee records:
- the payment method (
CARD_TAP,CARD_INSERT, orCARD_SWIPE), - the card type and the last four digits,
- the amount, the fee, and the net amount.
Full card numbers are never stored on the device or shown in Swipee.
The fee, when it applies
The proposed rate for live digital payments is 2.5% per successful transaction, deducted from the sale so your balance shows what you actually keep. Failed transactions are never charged. This rate is not being charged today because no live card money is moving.
Limits
A single sale is capped at US$10,000.
