Organise items with categories

Group your items so the till stays fast and your reports tell you which part of the shop earns.

Updated 21 August 2026

Categories do two jobs: they keep the till usable when your library grows past a screenful, and they let your reports answer "which part of my shop makes money?"

Create a category

  1. 1
Open Categories in the owner dashboard.
  2. 2
    Choose Add category.
  3. 3
Name it the way you think about your shop — Drinks, Groceries, Airtime, Household.
  4. 4
Add a description if it helps whoever works with you.
  5. 5
    Save.

Assign items

Open an item and pick its category, or set the category while you are creating the item. An item belongs to one category at a time.

How many categories?

Enough to find things, few enough to scan at a glance. Six to twelve works for most shops. If a category holds one item, fold it into a bigger one; if it holds a hundred, split it.

What categories give you

  • On the till — a filter row above the item grid.
  • In reports — sales by category, so you can see that drinks carry the shop or that household goods are dead weight.
  • In inventory — a way to review and reorder a whole section at once.

Renaming and deleting

Renaming is safe: items follow the category. Deleting a category does not delete its items — they simply become uncategorised, and you can reassign them.
