Variations and SKUs
Sell one item in several sizes, flavours, or pack sizes — each with its own price, barcode, and stock count.
Updated 21 August 2026
A variation is a version of an item that has its own price and its own stock. "Coke" is the item; "330ml can", "500ml bottle", and "2L" are its variations.
Why variations beat separate items
- One tile on the till instead of five.
- One place to change the name or the category.
- Separate stock counts and separate barcodes, so your numbers stay right.
- Reports that can show you the item as a whole or each size on its own.
Add variations
- 1Open the item in Inventory.
- 2Choose Add variation.
- 3Give it a name that describes only the difference — "500ml", not "Coke 500ml".
- 4Set its price, SKU, barcode, stock quantity, and low-stock level.
- 5Save. Repeat for each version you sell.
At the till, tapping the item now asks which variation before it joins the basket.
SKUs
A SKU is your own code for a sellable line. Swipee does not require one, but a good SKU scheme pays for itself when you start ordering stock and counting shelves.
A scheme that works:
DRK-COKE-500
DRK-COKE-2L
SNK-MAP-1KGCategory prefix, item, size. Short, readable, and it sorts sensibly.
Changing prices
Editing a variation's price changes it for future sales only. Past sales keep the price they were sold at, so your history stays accurate.
