The scanner will not read a barcode

Fix a camera that will not focus, a code that is not recognised, or a scan that opens the wrong item.

Updated 21 August 2026

The camera does not open

Swipee needs camera permission.

  1. 1
Open your phone's Settings → Apps → Swipee → Permissions.
  2. 2
    Allow Camera.
  3. 3
Return to Swipee and try again.

If the camera opens elsewhere but not in Swipee, close and reopen the app.

The camera opens but nothing is detected

  • Move the phone until the barcode fills about half the frame — too close will not focus.
  • Hold still for a moment; autofocus needs a beat.
  • Turn on the torch from the scanner screen in dim light.
  • Tilt slightly to kill glare on shiny packaging.
  • Flatten the label on curved or crumpled packs, and scan the flattest part.
  • Wipe the camera lens. A smeared lens defeats every other fix.

The code scans but no item is found

The barcode is not attached to any item yet. Swipee offers to create the item on the spot — the quickest way to build your library while unpacking a delivery. Or open the item and add the barcode manually. See Scan and manage barcodes.

Scanning adds the wrong item

Two lines share one barcode. This usually happens when a single unit and a multi-pack were given the same code. Open both, and give the multi-pack its own barcode from its own label.

The desktop scanner will not start

In the dashboard, browser scanning needs camera permission for the site:

  1. 1
Click the padlock in the address bar.
  2. 2
    Allow camera access.
  3. 3
    Reload the page.

Browser camera access also requires a secure (HTTPS) connection, so it will not work over plain HTTP.

Nothing works

Type the digits under the barcode by hand — every barcode field accepts typed entry — and carry on serving. Then contact support with your phone model.
