Pair a card reader
Connect a reader for chip-and-PIN and swipe cards, and what pairing does during the pilot.
Updated 21 August 2026
Contactless cards can be read by the phone itself. Chip-and-PIN and magnetic-stripe cards need a card reader paired with the phone.
Pair a reader
- 1Charge the reader and switch it on.
- 2On the phone, turn on Bluetooth and location permissions — Android requires both to discover nearby devices.
- 3In Swipee, open Settings → Hardware → Card reader.
- 4Choose Connect and pick your reader from the list.
- 5Confirm the pairing code if one is shown.
The reader's status appears in Settings → Hardware, and on the payment screen when you choose a card method.
Using it
- 1Tap Charge, choose Card, then Insert or Swipe.
- 2Hand the reader to the customer.
- 3They insert or swipe and enter their PIN.
- 4Swipee shows the result.
If the reader will not connect
- 1Check it is charged and switched on.
- 2Turn Bluetooth off and on again on the phone.
- 3Forget the reader in your phone's Bluetooth settings, then pair again.
- 4Keep the reader within a metre of the phone during pairing.
- 5Make sure it is not still paired to another phone — most readers connect to one device at a time.
Everyday care
- Charge it overnight, like the phone.
- Keep the card slot clean and free of dust.
- Do not leave it in direct sun or in a hot vehicle.
